How Do You Do That - Taking Better Photos Part 1

Well we are about to hit the road for our summer road trip, and I am feeling a bit nervous.  I have not been able to do half the things I thought I would be able to do, and I believe the computer will have to come with me.  Although I will be gone for a month, I still want to be able to update my blog while I am gone - just because I do not want you all to miss me too much.  While I am way I really want to go over some frequently asked questions about taking better pictures of your kids.  I currently shoot with the Canon 5D - but you may be surprise at what amazing photos can come out of your point ad shoot cameras.

Over the next few weeks I want to share a few of my basic principles of taking better pictures -  that can be both applied to the professional photographer as well as the average picture taker.  These basic principles as I see them are:

Lighting

Prospective

Engagement

Proximity

Creativity

I would first like to start with the topic of prospective.  There is something absolutely amazing that can happen when we change the angle in which we view our subject and I feel that this is the first step to seeing a hugh difference in your images.  Try standing on a stool and looking down at your subject then lay flat on your back and try to take the same picture - you will achieve a completely different look.

I sometimes will bring knee pads with me when I photography children because I often find myself on the floor wanting to be on their level.  I am not afraid to get down on my knees or even lay flat on my tummy - it really is about doing what it takes to get the picture right.  Next time you photograph your children, try it from a different angle. Stand over then and have them look up at you or get down on our knees so that you see eye to eye with them and note what differences you see.

Here are two examples of shooting from above, and one form shooting at the subject’s level:

Olivia

What a little cutie this little one is.  Little miss Olivia was so adorable for our photo shoot yesterday and I can see why her mom and dad adore her so much.  We went over to grandma house where my heart almost stopped when I saw all the cool vintage stuff throughout the back yard.  I sure do hope I get to photograph her again when she is a bit older so that we can take advantage of all the cool stuff in that yard.img_7991.jpgimg_7981.jpgimg_7819.jpgimg_7742.jpgimg_7784.jpgimg_7894.jpg

Too Stinking Cute! (can I say that?)

Well anyways, after 3 hours of sleep last night I woke up bright and early to head down to the Balboa Pier to photograph the newly married couple, Jay and Shanna Avila.  These two lovebirds are so cute and wonderful together , it really makes you believe in love. I was so excited when  Jay and Shanna decided to jump on the band wagon of the hottest new trend in wedding photography -  Trash the Dress (aka Day After Shoot).  I really think I could shoot these two till they both drop dead - sorry Jay, I know we came pretty close today.  Well here are a few fun picks from today and if you want to jump aboard and have photos like these too - just give me a call.  img_6150.jpgimg_6845.jpgimg_6331.jpgimg_6789.jpgimg_6318.jpgimg_5910.jpgimg_6702.jpgimg_6765.jpgimg_6190.jpgimg_6220.jpgimg_6308.jpgimg_6246.jpgimg_6279.jpgimg_6063.jpgimg_6041.jpgimg_6625.jpg img_6325.jpgimg_6343.jpg

The Little Warrior

Today I met an amazing little boy named Wyatt.  Wyatt had proven to be quite the little warrior and why should he not - his name dose mean warrior.  Wyatt is thriving and doing well inspite of his early entry into this world.  Today was mommies turn to share the spotlight with him and I so look forward to meeting the rest of the family later.  I am truly blessed to continue to met such amazing families..img_5769.jpg blog_5286.jpgblog_5423.jpgblog_5514.jpgblog_5622.jpgblog_5679.jpgimg_5756.jpgblog_5663.jpgblog_5717.jpgblog_5749.jpgblog_5452.jpgblog_5332.jpg img_5529.jpg

Jabbed

My wonderful husband Sam, was commenting to me a few nights ago that he was feeling left out.  He pointed out that I had blogged about the kids and that he could not find a picture or a mention of himself anywhere on my blog - so this is for you Sam…

I am not sure that this is what he had in mind, but I can up with this brilliant idea while watching FOX news this morning.  Good Day LA featured the latest JibJabs dealing with the upcoming presidential elections  - and the light bulb went off in my head.  Sam is such a great guy that he does deserve to have his day in the spotlight.  He is a wonderful husband and for most of our marriage stood by me and cared for me during my battle with cancer.   It may take a second to load, but just sit back - it is worth the laugh.  Sam I am honored to have you on my blog - I hope this is what you meant…
